Before the First Whistle:

It’s still dark when the first alarm goes off.

For those who wear the North Coast colours, mornings aren’t just part of the routine, they’re a ritual. Before most of the world is awake, they're already moving. Boots are laced, gear is packed, and minds are already on the field.

Week after week, the kilometres add up. Late nights become routine, and early mornings become expected. There are long drives, busy workdays, and sacrifices that most people never see.

Yet nobody complains.

Because for those who put on the North Coast jersey, it has never been just about playing rugby league. It’s about commitment. It’s about mateship. It’s about wearing the jersey with pride and showing up for the people beside you, no matter the distance or the challenge.

The North Coast System:

The North Coast System is more than just a name. It wasn't built overnight. While the North Coast Marlins are the team people see on game day, the North Coast System is everything that makes those games possible.

It isn’t just one team, one jersey or one postcode. It’s a community. A network of players, coaches, volunteers, families and supporters. We are united by one standard and a commitment to each other.

It's not about where you're from. It's about the effort you put in, the sacrifices you're willing to make and the commitment you show to the people around you. That's what the North Coast System is all about.

One phrase you'll hear around the club is "Buy In or Burn Out." It's more than just a saying; it's the standard we hold ourselves to. Everyone has a role to play. Those who buy into the culture, the commitment and the team become part of something bigger than themselves.

More Than a Team:

It starts with players going straight to training after work, sacrificing family and personal time to training nights. Coaches planning sessions, preparing for game days and building relationships with sponsors. Volunteers giving up their time to help. First aid officers, water runners and team managers. Families making the trip to training and game days to support the team.

Whether you're wearing the jersey, filling the water bottles or cheering from the sideline, you're part of what North Coast has built. That's what makes it special.

Every person involved has a different story. Different backgrounds, different journeys and different reasons for being here. But one thing connects them all—a commitment to the System and the people beside them.

Good People Before Good Footballers:

The standards at North Coast didn't happen by chance. They were built with a clear vision and a belief that culture will always come before talent. What exists today is the result of five years of hard work, countless phone calls, late nights and a vision that continues to grow. In the beginning it was about recruiting big names, but that soon changed to building a culture instead. North Coast doesn’t just want good footballers; they want good people too. "Good people before good footballers" has become one of the standards the club is built on.

The standards within the North Coast System are high. A one-strike policy, full commitment and showing up every week are all part of the culture. As Francis puts it, "life doesn’t give you many second chances, and I’ve been fortunate enough to learn the hardest way possible.”

For Francis, the North Coast System is about much more than rugby league. “It (North Coast System) allows me to help young men understand there’s more to life, especially during the off season, than drugs and alcohol. The North Coast System allows young men, up-and-coming coaches, and people, a place to try and reach their ceiling and if they work hard enough nothing is impossible” – Francis

Buy In or Burn Out:

At the heart of the North Coast System is a phrase that has become part of its identity: Buy In or Burn Out. At first glance, it can sound confronting, but the message behind it is simple. Commitment can't be forced.

Francis continues, "We don't chase players. We choose the guys who want to make a difference, who are willing to be comfortable in very uncomfortable situations… I’ve learned that you can give someone every opportunity in the world, but if they don’t truly want to be there, or they think they’re bigger than the team, eventually they’ll leave for the next opportunity, the next pay cheque or the easier path.”

Buying in means more than turning up on game day. It means committing to the standards, the work and the people around you, week after week. Those willing to make those sacrifices and difficult decisions are the people who represent North Coast.

The Vision:

Francis is the first to admit that building the North Coast System hasn't always been easy.

"There are weeks that are harder than others, but at the end of the day, nothing is impossible. I'm just a local bloke with a family, but I have high aspirations to coach at the highest level."

For now, though, his focus remains on what North Coast has become.

"I'm incredibly grateful for what 9PL has allowed me to build. More importantly, we've created a place for local boys to call home during the off-season—a safe place that promotes a cleaner, healthier lifestyle. We're more than the game. We're a community built on hard work. First on the field and last to leave. We train hard, and we believe in that."

The Players' Perspective:

While Francis built the vision, it's the players who bring it to life every week. Their stories are different, but the values that keep them here remain the same.

For Will, joining North Coast wasn't a difficult decision. Having been coached by Francis from a young age, he'd built a relationship that extended well beyond rugby league.

Every player has a different reason for pulling on the North Coast jersey, but the common thread is the people beside them and the culture they've chosen to be part of.

Game day only tells part of the story. Behind every performance are the training sessions that test players physically, mentally and as teammates.
